The Porsche Macan has long been a favorite among Australian drivers, accounting for a significant portion of Porsche’s sales down under. So, when Porsche decided to transition their best-seller from an internal combustion engine to an all-electric powertrain, it was undoubtedly a daring move. But with the increasing adoption of electric vehicles in Australia, Porsche is betting big on their customers’ readiness to embrace the change with the all-new 2025 Porsche Macan.

Embracing the Electric Future

Built on a brand-new electric platform shared with Audi, the 2025 Porsche Macan represents Porsche’s ambitious foray into the electric vehicle market, following the success of the Taycan. The Macan Electric will soon be joined by the electric 718 range, marking a significant expansion of Porsche’s EV lineup.

We had the chance to test drive the Macan 4 and the Macan Turbo, the initial models leading this electric transformation. Driving these vehicles felt like a glimpse into the future, where Porsche’s legendary performance meets cutting-edge electric technology.

When you take a bold leap in pricing, you expect a significant increase in quality and customization. Porsche delivers exactly that with the 2025 Macan Electric. This model not only boasts a wide array of external colors—13 standard and almost 60 individual options—but also offers an interior that can be tailored to suit any taste.

Customization and Build Quality

The interior customization options are extensive, featuring eight interior colors with a variety of combinations and materials to choose from. Even the key has received a redesign and can be personalized. The build quality feels like a significant upgrade from the previous generation, surpassing even the Cayenne, which is built in Slovenia, while the Macan is manufactured in Germany.

Enhanced Space and Comfort

The new Macan Electric sits on a longer wheelbase, translating to improved leg and knee room in the second row. Unlike the previous Macan, which was somewhat cramped, the new model comfortably accommodates a 185cm tall adult in both the front and rear seats. Depending on the spec, you also get quad-zone climate control, with controls accessible via a screen located at the back of the center console.

Cutting-Edge Infotainment

The infotainment system in the 2025 Macan Electric has seen a substantial upgrade. The driver’s display is a 12.6-inch curved screen, similar to what you’d find in the Taycan and Cayenne. The central infotainment screen is a 10.9-inch display, with an optional additional 10.9-inch screen for the passenger available on the Macan 4 and Turbo.

Running on Android Automotive OS, this new system offers a smarter and more intuitive interface. Google manages the base system, ensuring seamless updates and functionality, while Porsche customizes the user-facing layer. The system supports both wired and wireless smartphone mirroring for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and can run compatible Android applications like Spotify and Tidal. The apps project onto the infotainment display with the same functionality as on your phone, making it snappy and fast to use. Voice controls are also available, allowing you to operate the system hands-free.

Augmented Reality Head-Up Display

One of the standout features is the head-up display with augmented reality. This innovative feature projects road curvature, navigation, and warnings directly onto the road ahead of the driver, enhancing both safety and convenience.

Cargo Space: A Mixed Bag

In terms of cargo capacity, the Macan 4 offers 540 liters while the Macan Turbo provides 480 liters. These figures are somewhat disappointing, especially considering this model is built on a brand new, bespoke electric vehicle platform. Porsche didn’t fully maximize storage opportunities around the rear or front motors, leading to these less-than-ideal capacities.

Space Compromises and the Battery Pack

One significant factor in the space compromise is the Macan’s 100kWh battery pack. Fitting this large battery meant sacrifices beneath the skin. The increased mass of the battery necessitated a larger electric motor at the rear to achieve acceleration figures comparable to the Tesla Model Y. This design choice further reduced storage space around the motor. Additionally, the high-end sound system’s subwoofer in the Turbo model, along with the tank and peripherals for the air suspension and anti-roll system, all contribute to the limited storage capacity. There’s no space for a spare wheel, which might be a crucial consideration for some buyers.

Balancing Act: Performance vs. Practicality

It’s important to note that while the storage space in the new Macan Electric is more than its predecessor, it still falls short compared to some roomier electric SUVs on the market. This trade-off between performance and practicality might not be a dealbreaker, but it’s worth considering if storage is a top priority for you.
